Instrument Rating requirements


REQUIREMENTS

Hold at least a current private pilot certificate, or be concurrently applying for a private pilot certificate with an airplane instrument rating (Private Certificate and Instrument Rating exams may be combined into one exam) All areas for each must be tested.

ENDORSEMENTS

  • FAR 61.39 (a)(6)(i) training within previous 2 calendar months

  • FAR 61.39 (a)(6)(ii) prepared for practical test FAR 61.39 (a)(6)(iii) knowledge test deficiencies Ground training

  • FAR 61.65 (b) “Received and Logged” (or a home-study course)

FLIGHT EXPERIENCE (FAR 61.65 (D))

  • 50 Hours Cross Country PIC (10 hours must be in an airplane)

  • 40 Hours Actual or Simulated Instrument Flight Time of which 15 hours must be with an Authorized Instructor, or CFII)

  • Up to 10 hours may be in a Basic Aviation Training Device (BATD)

  • Up to 20 hours may be in an Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD)

  • Applicants must provide a copy of the Letter of Authorization (LOA) when using ATD flight training time credit to meet the minimum experience requirements for a pilot certificate, rating or privilege

  • 3 hours of Instruction for the Practical Exam in an airplane within the preceding 2 calendar months

IFR Cross Country (Dual with Authorized Instructor)

  • 250 NM total along airways or by directed routing from an air traffic control facility, an instrument approach at each airport including 3 different instrument approaches using Navigation Systems

Applicant must have a View-Limiting Device available for the Flight Portion of the Exam
